Honestly, the shit we all have to do to just to keep our businesses running, let alone thriving, is never ending. It’s OK, since we’re doing this because we love it. But just because we love it, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a pain in the ass sometimes.
I often feel like I’m scrambling to get it all done and trying my damnedest to make everything perfect. Which is problematic of course, since nothing is perfect.
It’ exhausting, you know?
I’ve started to take on the following mantra:
When I say “screw the rest”, what I mean is the rest of the crap we allow ourselves to believe about what we should be doing better, more, and faster. There are these things that never seem to be done enough, good enough, fast enough and because of that we’re all making ourselves crazy.
The sooner we get better at finding that balance between pushing ourselves to do great things while not abusing our health and sanity, the better off we’ll be. I’m not saying this is easy, our businesses are so close to our hearts and they are a representation to the world of ourselves and our creativity. It’s hard not to feel the pressure of that. It’s hard not to feel like “it can always be a little better”.
But if we don’t get used to being proud of what we did accomplish, rather than focusing on what we didn’t accomplish, we’re going to get burnt out way too quickly. And once burn out settles in, our precious businesses start to become a drain on our lives; they become something we have to do instead of something we love to do. And that sucks.
So the next time you’re feeling so exhausted that you can’t imagine doing one more thing towards making it ‘perfect’, don’t. Just stop. Look at all you’ve done so far, smile, and walk out of the damn room. You’ll thank yourself. I know I do.
Lots of love and encouragement,
